- We found all six of our Falcons exhibited this problem so long as they were
- connected to one particular monitor. The problem cleared up when we connected
- them to a 15-inch multisync. This is of course not conclusive, but it suggests
- there could be a problem with all Falcons, but it only arises when connected to
- certain monitors - particularly the cheaper 14 inch VGA types. I have not yet
- seen it occur on a 15 or 17 inch display.
-
- The problem seems to be some kind of 'debounce' signal which the monitor picks
- up in the form of noise on the vertical sync line. The Falcon interprets this
- as a vertical blank, and restarts it's display cycle, accompanied with another VBL
- interrupt. You can actually see tiny dark 'flecks' on the screen just about 20-40
- scanlines down the screen where the video hardware tries to restart the top border
- during mid-display. It's much easier to see on a high-res white display.
-
- It can probably be fixed by supplying a cleaner dot clock (like Blowup or something)
- or maybe placing a small capacitor across the correct pins on the video lead or
- even the motherboard. I have not tried this myself as I don't have a 14inch VGA
- handy. Would be interesting if anyone tried it out...
